Talad Sot Kathu (ตลาดสดกะทู้)
Talad Sot Kathu is a large fresh market at the main Kathu intersection, next to the Caltex petrol station on the road between Patong Beach and Phuket Town. It is one of the biggest fresh markets on the island and serves mostly locals from the Kathu area. The market has been renovated and expanded in recent years. It used to be a dark, crowded place, but the new building is clean, well-lit, and properly covered. I pass this market almost every time I drive between Patong and town, and the number of motorbikes parked in front keeps growing.
What to Find at Talad Sot Kathu
The market sells everything you need for a Thai kitchen. Fresh vegetables, herbs, tropical fruits, meat, fish, and seafood are spread across rows of concrete stalls under a metal roof. One section is dedicated to fresh produce, with vendors displaying mountains of morning glory, Thai basil, lemongrass, galangal, chillies, and many greens you probably have never seen before. The fruit stalls have all the local favourites. Pineapples, dragon fruit, mandarins, and whatever is in season.
There is also a cooked food section where vendors sell ready-made Thai dishes. Curries, grilled chicken, som tum, kanom jeen, and all sorts of snacks you can bag and take home. This is what many locals do after work. They stop by, pick up dinner, and drive home. You will also find a few stalls selling flowers, offering supplies for the temple, clothing, and household items.
A Bit of History
Kathu has a long history connected to tin mining and Chinese settlement, and this market has been a gathering point for the local community for a long time. The old Kathu village and the Kathu Chinese Shrine, believed to be the birthplace of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, are not far from here.
Is Talad Sot Kathu Worth a Visit?
This is not a tourist market. You will not find souvenirs or T-shirts. Prices are local prices, and most vendors do not speak English. But that is exactly what makes it worth a visit. It is a real, working market where Phuket people shop every day. If you are staying in Patong and want to see something different from the beach and the bars, it is only a 10-minute drive over the hill.
Note: There are two fresh markets in Kathu. This one is at the main intersection near the Caltex station. The other Kathu Fresh Market is on Wichitsongkram Road, opposite the Shell station.
