Starz Rooftop Bar Karon Beach
Starz Rooftop Bar is a small open-air bar and restaurant sitting on top of a narrow building right next to Karon Circle, facing the north end of Karon Beach. The rooftop is part of the Karon Sea Sands Resort and sits above a stack of restaurants, including O’Reilly’s Irish Pub on the ground floor, Kiran’s Indian Restaurant and Ikigai Japanese on the first floor.
Food ordered upstairs comes from any of the kitchens below, so the menu mixes Thai, Indian, Japanese and Western dishes in one place. Karon Beach has very few rooftops, so finding this one felt like a real surprise.
Location
Starz is a hidden rooftop bar on Karon Road, just a few steps from the Karon Circle at the north end of the beach. The building is easy to spot once you know where to look. It is tall, narrow and modern, squeezed between older shophouses and the small beachfront park. From the ground floor, look for the O’Reilly’s Irish Pub sign and take the stairs on the side of the building all the way to the top. The walk up is a bit of a climb, but the view at the top is worth every step.
Atmosphere
The rooftop is small and casual, with maybe a dozen tables on a wooden deck and a thatched bar in the middle. One side faces the sea, with a clear view over the trees of the small beachfront park, the road and the Andaman Sea beyond. The other side looks back over the rooftops of Karon and the green hills behind.
There is no pretence here, no dress code, no loud music. Just a relaxed little terrace where you can sit with a cold drink and watch the sun drop into the sea. I went around 6 pm, and the sunset from up there was lovely, with just enough breeze to make the heat disappear.
About the Food
Because Starz shares its kitchen with the restaurants on the floors below, the menu is unusually wide for such a small bar. You can order Indian curries from Kiran’s, Japanese rice bowls and sushi from Ikigai, pub food from O’Reilly’s and a selection of Thai dishes too. It is not fine dining, but the food is honest, and the prices are fair for a rooftop in a beach area. The bar itself serves the usual cocktails, beers, wines and soft drinks. Service is friendly and unhurried, which suits the mood of the place. For a small hidden spot in an area that has almost no rooftops, Starz is a little gem and a nice change from the busier beachfront places below.
