LAWOI’ Restaurant on Langsuan Road, Bangkok
LAWOI’ is on the lower floor of Velaa Community Mall on Langsuan Road, next to Villa Market. The concept is Modern Thai Izakaya, which we hadn’t seen before. It’s the latest restaurant from Chef Ton, who started Ledu, one of our favourite spots in Bangkok.
What We Ordered
The aged raw fish was a highlight, light texture and very fresh. Served with a selection of sauces. The Three Types of Aged Fish Sashimi (460 Baht) uses fish from southern Thailand, prepared with the Ikejime process. The spicy fish ceviche was good too.
Chakachan Talay, or sea cicada (260 Baht), is a Phuket speciality and one of our favourites. Pla Sai is deep-fried sand whiting with butter sauce, pairs well with sake.
The pan-fried squid roe (290 Baht) was delicate with good flavour. Grilled octopus tentacles (250 Baht) were done right. We finished with a seafood paella served with beef bone marrow.
They have a good sake list to go with the food.
The restaurant doesn’t look like much from outside. We went during soft opening, so it may have changed since. Worth trying if you’re around Langsuan.
About the Name
Lawoi’ means “sea” in the language of the Urak Lawoi, an aboriginal Austronesian people who live on Phuket and Phi Phi islands off Thailand’s west coast. “Urak Lawoi” translates to “people of the sea.”
