Fresh Market in Kathu

There are two fresh markets in Kathu. This Kathu Fresh Market is located opposite the Shell Station, on Wichitsongkram Road between Patong Beach and Phuket Town. It is smaller and quieter than Talad Sot Kathu at the main intersection, but it has become more popular in recent years. The market opens early in the morning and closes around 2 pm, so it is very much a morning market.

The building is not fancy. It is a covered structure with metal roofing and open sides, the kind of market you find in every Thai district. It may look a bit rough from the outside, but inside the produce is fresh and the prices are fair. Most customers are locals who live or work nearby, and it is busy enough in the morning that parking can get tight.

What to Find at Kathu Fresh Market

The market covers the basics. Fresh vegetables, herbs, tropical fruits, meat, fish, and seafood. You will see the usual Thai market spread. Bundles of morning glory, bags of chillies, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, and all the ingredients that go into the curries and stir-fries you eat at local restaurants. The fruit section always has whatever is in season.

There is a cooked food section too. Vendors sell ready-made dishes like curries, grilled pork, sticky rice, kanom jeen, and various Thai snacks. Many people come here just to grab breakfast or pick up lunch. It is cheap and the food is freshly prepared.
You will also find a few stalls selling dried goods, spices, condiments, and basic household items.

Is Kathu Fresh Market Worth a Visit?

If you are staying in Patong and want to see a local market without driving far, this one is easy to reach. It is right on the main road, about halfway between Patong Beach and Phuket Town. You will probably drive past it without noticing. Look for the Shell station and the market is directly opposite.

It is not a place you would plan a trip around, but if you are on your way somewhere and it is still morning, it is worth a quick stop. The atmosphere is relaxed, the vendors are friendly, and you get to see how locals shop for their daily meals. Come early for the best selection.

Note: The other Kathu market, Talad Sot Kathu, is at the main intersection near the Caltex station. It is larger and open longer.
