Modern Southern Thai Cuisine in Phuket Town
Royd is an upmarket restaurant found on Dibuk Road in Phuket Town, a short distance from the popular Thalang Road where the Sunday Walking Street Market is held every week. The restaurant is small and trendy, set in one of those typical shophouses lining the street of the old town, and serves modern Southern Thai cuisine created by Chef Suwijak.
Royd became very popular once they appeared on the Michelin Guide for Phuket and its region and reservations are required, not so much because the restaurant is full, but rather for the team to prepare all the ingredients necessary for the 7 or 9-course dinner.
The place is small and cosy, with dimmed-down lights. Guests can choose to sit at tables or the counter, which offers a front-row view of the preparation counter and cocktail bar.
The 7 or 9-course dinner is sophisticated modern Thai cuisine, sharing the chef’s views on southern Thai dishes which often involve curries and strong spices. The food is beautifully crafted with research on colours and texture but lacks a bit of dimension when it comes to taste, as strong curries and southern spices can be overwhelming.
Each dish is tiny and described at length when brought to your table, and if you are not familiar with Thai cuisine it can be a bit challenging to understand. Expect your dinner to last at least 2 hours.
As the prices are rather high (9-Courses 3,290 baht, 7-Courses 2,990 baht), Royd may be just a one-time experience for a special occasion in the old part of Phuket Town.
