Map of Kata Beach
This map of Kata Beach shows the main areas, restaurants, shops and landmarks we have visited over the years. Kata Beach is compact enough to explore on foot, but knowing which part of the beach suits you best makes a big difference, especially when choosing where to stay.
Kata is roughly divided into three areas: Kata North (often called Kata Centre), Kata Beachfront and Kata South. Each has a different feel, and the map below will help you get your bearings before you arrive.
Kata North (Kata Centre)
Kata North is the busiest part, centred around the main road that runs parallel to the beach. This is where you will find most of the restaurants, street shopping, massage shops, convenience stores and a few bars. The Kata Night Market is here too. If you want to be within walking distance of everything without needing transport, Kata North is the most practical base. Several mid-range and budget hotels sit along the side streets just a few minutes from the sand.
Kata Beachfront
The beachfront road runs along the full length of Kata Beach with a handful of restaurants and bars that have direct views of the sea. During high season, the southern end of the beachfront is lined with sun loungers and umbrella rentals. The northern end is quieter and closer to the rocky headland that separates Kata from Karon Beach. A few of the larger resort hotels, including Beyond Resort Kata, sit right on this stretch.
Kata South
The southern end of Kata is more residential and noticeably quieter. The road climbs slightly towards the headland separating Kata from Kata Noi Beach, and you will find a few smaller restaurants and local shops along the way. This area suits travellers who prefer a calmer setting while still being a short walk or ride from Kata Centre. The viewpoint above Kata Noi, one of the most photographed spots in Phuket, is accessible from the southern end of Kata.
Getting Around Kata Beach
Kata is small enough that you can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes along the beachfront road. For trips to nearby beaches like Karon (10 minutes north) or Kata Noi (5 minutes south), tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis wait along the main road. Renting a scooter is the most common way to explore further, but the hill between Kata and Kata Noi is steep and worth knowing about in advance.
