Wat Suan Dok

A peaceful temple with royal tombs and a golden chedi

Wat Suan Dok is just a short drive west of Chiang Maiโ€™s Old City on the way to Doi Suthep, and it often feels more open and quiet than most temples in town. The name means โ€œflower garden templeโ€ because the land used to be part of the kingโ€™s royal garden back in the 14th century. It was built in 1373 to house a sacred relic brought from Sukhothai, and the large golden chedi in the centre still holds part of that relic today.

One of the most striking parts of the temple is the group of white mausoleums near the entrance. These hold the ashes of Chiang Maiโ€™s royal family, brought here in the early 1900s. They contrast sharply with the gold chedi and give the temple a very calm and reflective feel.

Thereโ€™s also a Buddhist university on the grounds and a monk chat area where curious visitors can talk with English-speaking monks. The whole place is open, breezy, and great for quiet photos. Locals sometimes bring their sketchbooks or watercolours and sit in the shade near the garden. Itโ€™s not as busy as the temples in the centre, which makes it a nice break from the city.
