An ancient temple with a massive chedi and royal history
Wat Lok Moli is one of those temples people often notice without planning to visit. It sits just outside the north wall of Chiang Maiโs Old City, near Chang Phuak Gate. The large, dark brick chedi is hard to miss โ itโs one of the oldest in town, and unlike many others, it hasnโt been covered in gold or plaster.
This temple goes back to the 14th century, and it once housed Burmese monks invited by the local king to spread Buddhism in the region. Later, it became a royal temple where members of the Mengrai dynasty were cremated and their ashes kept in the chedi.
The wooden viharn at the front was rebuilt not too long ago in traditional Lanna style, with sharp roof lines and carved details. Inside, thereโs a large Buddha image and a quiet space where a few people usually sit or light incense. Thereโs no entrance fee, and it rarely feels busy, which makes it a nice stop for anyone exploring the outer edge of the Old City.
