A local favourite for northern Thai food and Khao Soi

Huen Phen is one of those places that feels like it’s been part of Chiang Mai forever. The restaurant sits in a wooden house near the middle of the Old Town, and even though it’s quite large inside, it still feels homey and relaxed. The furniture is mixed and slightly worn in a charming way, and there are plenty of plants and little decorations around.

They’re known for northern Thai dishes, and their Khao Soi is especially popular. It’s a curry noodle soup made with a coconut milk base, usually served with chicken, and topped with crispy egg noodles. On the side, they give you lime, pickled mustard greens, and raw shallots, which you mix in yourself. It’s creamy, not too spicy, and full of flavour.

The kitchen is open, so you can see them preparing everything fresh. Service is quick and friendly, and prices are fair. It’s the kind of place both locals and tourists come back to, not for trends but for solid, honest food.
