Great Live Music and Swedish Food in Karon

Churchill Bar and Restaurant sits just off Karon’s main road, below the Rattana Beach Hotel. It’s only a few metres from Patak Road, but most people walk right past without noticing. That’s a mistake. One of the reasons to come here is Cole Ley & The Collective Band. They’re fantastic. We’ve seen a lot of live music in Phuket, and this five-piece group is one of the best. They play blues, jazz, soul and pop covers, and the energy fills the whole room. Even if you’re not planning dinner, it’s worth stopping in just for a drink and the music. The band plays on Fridays and Saturdays from around 8 pm, with a DJ keeping things going between sets.

The menu has a strong Swedish influence, which is unusual for Phuket. Swedish meatballs with lingonberry and cream sauce cost 370 Baht. The Swedish Kebab Pizza is 420 Baht and has become a talking point among regulars. There’s also pyttipanna (a traditional Swedish hash) for 320 Baht. Thai and Western dishes round out the options if Nordic food isn’t your thing.

Beyond food, there are pool tables, shuffleboard, darts, and big screens showing football matches. All the games are free to use. Happy hour runs from 11 am to 7 pm with buy-one-get-one cocktails, which makes afternoon drinks here pretty good value.

The crowd is mostly expats and Scandinavians mixed with tourists who found their way off the main strip. It’s the kind of place where you come for one beer and end up staying all evening.
