An Ethical Elephant Sanctuary in Phuket
Freedom Elephant Reserve Phuket is an ethical elephant sanctuary whose dream is to provide retired working elephants with love and care, with limited human interaction on an observation-only basis.
Our ethical elephant sanctuary in Phuket prioritises the well-being of our elephants by allowing them to be free-roaming and live as naturally as possible. We limit human interaction and avoid activities that exploit elephants for entertainment.
Guests will be able to observe the natural behaviour of our rescued elephants in an ethical manner, as they walk alongside the herd through the valley and grasslands of the reserve, taking in their naturally friendly and playful personalities, which make our elephants our world, and why we need to help save more of them.
Why No Riding No Bathing

Elephant bathing and riding are often considered unethical and harmful to elephants, and some sanctuaries and organisations, like ours, are working to end these practices through understanding and education.
We understand that many organisations claim to be ethical, but how can they be when they go against the very principle of what ethical means? This is why we limit our guests’ interaction and do not allow them to bathe, shower, or swim with our herd.
Why It’s Unethical

Elephants can develop behavioural and psychological problems like stress and anxiety from bathing, showering, and riding. This is because they are often forced to stay in position whilst being poked with a nail.
Health Problems
Elephants can develop physical health problems like foot and joint pain, skin irritation, and respiratory infections.
Shorter Lifespan
Elephants used for tourism often have shorter lifespans than elephants in sanctuaries.
Unhygienic
Bathing elephants can be unhygienic and harmful to both the elephant and the tourist due to a build-up of bacteria in the pools, as the elephants urinate and defecate in these pools pretty much every time they enter the water.
Safety Risks
Bathing elephants can be dangerous for tourists and mahouts, especially if the elephant is frightened or spooked, as it will bolt, and anyone in its way could be seriously injured.
