A Quiet Spot Few Tourists Know
The Bangkok Science Museum and Planetarium (also called the Science Centre for Education) is one of those places that many people don’t know exist, even though it’s been around for decades. It’s located on Sukhumvit Road, just a short walk from Ekkamai BTS Station, and has been open since the 1960s. From the outside, the buildings look a bit dated, and inside, some areas could use a refresh. But there’s still something interesting about it, especially for families living in Bangkok or travellers looking for a different kind of experience.
The planetarium show is the main highlight. It’s in a dome-shaped theatre where they project the stars and planets on the ceiling. The technology is a mix of old and new, but it still works well. The show is in Thai, with some English subtitles, and they sometimes have English sessions on weekends (it’s good to check in advance).
They also have a few halls with exhibits about space, dinosaurs, energy, and simple science. Some parts are interactive, and younger kids might enjoy pressing buttons and watching things light up. But a lot of it looks like it hasn’t changed in a long time. We didn’t expect anything high-tech like in Tokyo or Singapore, and some overseas visitors might not find it very exciting unless they’re here with children or just curious to see something different.
The entrance fee is very low, and Thai residents and students get an even bigger discount. It’s clearly more focused on local school groups than international tourists, but we still found it worth seeing once, mainly for the planetarium and to get a glimpse into how science education is promoted in Thailand.
