A Hidden Thai Restaurant by the River in Talad Noi

Naam 1608 is one of those rare restaurants you donโ€™t just stumble uponโ€”you have to know itโ€™s there. Hidden deep in Talad Noi, along a narrow riverside lane behind the old Portuguese Church, this Thai restaurant sits quietly by the Chao Phraya River, offering a calm escape from the busy streets of Chinatown.

We followed Google Maps through a maze of tiny alleys and motorbike shortcuts before spotting a small wooden sign pointing to the river. From the outside, the building doesnโ€™t look like a restaurant at all. Itโ€™s a restored two-storey wooden shophouse with antique details and a soft vintage touch. Inside, it feels like visiting someoneโ€™s riverside home. Old family photos hang on the walls, ceiling fans spin slowly, and mellow Thai music plays in the background.

The menu is short and focused, mostly made of classic Thai dishes with a homemade feel. We tried the Nam Prik Long Rua (chilli paste with crispy pork, served with vegetables), which was rich and slightly smoky. The Kaeng Som Pla (sour curry with fish) was tangy, with a strong southern-style flavour. They also serve simple drinks like lemongrass tea and iced Thai coffee. Portions are not too big, but everything tasted fresh and was made with care.

What makes the place special is the river view. The back deck opens directly onto the water, and there are only a few small tables. Itโ€™s peaceful, especially at sunset, when longtail boats pass by and the light reflects off the water.

Good to Know

  • Naam 1608 is located near the Holy Rosary Church in Talad Noi, about a 10-minute walk from Hua Lamphong MRT station.
  • The restaurant is small and often full on weekendsโ€”reservations are a good idea.
  • They donโ€™t try to be trendy. Itโ€™s just good food in a beautiful, quiet spot.

There are many stylish places along the river these days, but Naam 1608 keeps things simple and personal. Itโ€™s not fancy, but it feels realโ€”and thatโ€™s what makes it worth finding.
