Blue Elephant Bangkok

A Luxury Thai Restaurant in Sathorn

Blue Elephant Bangkok is a Thai restaurant in a restored mansion on Sathorn Road, right across from Surasak BTS. I’ve taken friends here three or four times now. It’s the kind of place that works when someone visits and wants Thai food in a nicer setting than a street stall but doesn’t want to deal with a stiff hotel restaurant. The building alone makes an impression.

Last time was in November with a couple visiting from Australia. They’d never had proper massaman curry before. The high ceilings and wooden floors got them interested before the food even arrived, which is half the point of bringing people here.

The menu covers all the classics plus some dishes you won’t find elsewhere. We usually share starters — the pomelo salad and crispy golden bags work well for a table of four — then move to mains. The massaman curry is reliable. The crab curry is rich, maybe too rich if you’re ordering multiple dishes. On that last visit, my friend ordered the pad thai and said it was the best she’d had, though I think she was being polite.

Service is good, sometimes almost too attentive. They change plates between courses and keep water glasses full without being asked. One thing I appreciated: a friend showed up underdressed, and the staff didn’t make it awkward. Small thing, but it matters.

They run cooking classes during the day, which I haven’t tried but keep meaning to. It could be a good option if you want more than just a meal.

If you’re heading to Phuket, there’s a sister restaurant in Phuket Town inside the old Phra Pitak Chinpracha Mansion. Same concept, similar quality, plus a garden. Worth knowing about if you liked this one.

If you are planning to visit Phuket, there is also a Blue Elephant restaurant in Phuket Town. It’s located in the impressive Phra Pitak Chinpracha Mansion, a historic building with a lot of character and a large garden. The Phuket branch is known for its southern Thai cuisine and is often mentioned as one of the best places to eat in Phuket Old Town. The experience there is just as memorable, with the added bonus of dining in a former governor’s residence. Read more

I arrived in Phuket in 1994 and have never left... After travelling through 40+ countries and working with Club Med and Expedia, I launched Phuket 101 in 2011 to share what I've explored, discovered and learned. Everything here comes from personal experience, with my own photography and videos from across Thailand.View Author posts
