What to Do at Wat Kanlayanamit?
Wat Kanlayanamit is a magnificent temple on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. It was constructed in 1825 during the reign of King Rama III on the bank of the Chao Phraya River. It is famous for its Buddha image of Phra Phuttha Trai Rattananayok more commonly known as Luangpho To.
The main attraction of this temple is the Buddha image of Luangpho To. The Buddha image stands at a staggering height of 14 metres and spans 10 metres. What makes it unique is that during the reign of King Rama III, this Buddha image was the only image with a Palilai posture. It is located at the centre of the temple in the main sanctuary.
Wat Kanlyanamit is also host to the largest giant bell in Thailand. This can be found in the newly built bell tower adjacent to the main sanctuary. Many believe that after making merit, you can ring the bell 3 times to ensure it comes true or for just good luck.
In addition, you can find Chinese gods outside the main sanctuary where you can make merit to it. Each god represents different factors of life. These include wealth, health, stability, love etc.
Wat Kanlayanamit is accesible by MRT or the ferry. You can get off at MRT Itsarapap station and take a 20-minute walk to the temple. It may be extremely hot but you can take that opportunity to explore the local areas of Thonburi.
However, a more popular option is getting a ferry at Atsadang Pier, located next to Park Klong Talat Flower Market to cross the river to Wat Kanlayanamit Pier.
