Legendary Michelin Street Food in Thonburi
Somsak Pu Ob is a legendary street food restaurant in Thonburi, Bangkok. It’s known for its signature Pu and Goong Ob Woon Sen, which is glass noodles with either prawn or crab. They have 2 branches, walking distance apart, so if one’s busy, you can just take a 5-minute walk to the other branch. We recommend the Latya branch, which is the new, air-conditioned one. Though not the original branch along the roadside, but very similar in quality. This spot is popular among locals as it has earned a Michelin guide many years in a row.
We ordered prawn with glass noodles with a side of boiled cockles. Their signature dish is served in a bubbling claypot full of fragrance from the sesame oil and pork fat. The noodle is soaked with the rich sauce, making it extremely flavorful. Although there were only 3 prawns in the claypot, the size of it was huge. Cockles were boiled perfectly up to your choice, either with a bit of blood or fully cooked. How can you forget about the seafood sauce that gives the perfect kick to the seafood and the noodles?
Despite its humble setting, Somsak Pu Ob impresses with its simple menu and bold execution. The goong ob ranges from 300 to 400 baht, while the pu ob woon sen (crab with glass noodles) can range from 300 up to 1000 baht, depending on the size of the crab. Portions of seafood are generous; however, the noodles aren’t, so we recommend spending an extra 20 baht to get the extra noodles. The stall opens in the late afternoon from 3 pm to 9 pm, but we recommend going early because we went during dinner time and we missed out on the boiled mussels as they sold out.
Food comes fast, bubbling hot and full of flavour, perfectly sums up Somsak Pu Ob. If you are exploring the Thonburi side of Bangkok or if you are looking for great food at a reasonable price, this is a must-visit.
