Hand Roll and Sake Bar at Velaa Sindhorn Village

Maison Roru is a brand new hand roll and sake bar tucked inside Velaa Sindhorn Village on Langsuan Road, in Ploenchit. Itโ€™s the latest project by Chef Masato Shimizu and Khun Pla from the Iberry Group. Those who know Sushi Masato on Sukhumvit will recognise the names immediately. We were lucky to discover Chef Masatoโ€™s hidden omakase spot years ago and still return several times a year.

Maison Roru brings a new and slightly more relaxed interpretation of his sushi craftsmanship. Itโ€™s more casual in style, but still very serious about quality. Even on opening night, the restaurant was already packed, with a queue of guests waiting outside despite the need for reservations. We were luckyโ€”our seats at the counter were ready when we arrived.

Several sushi chefs were working behind the counter, and we recognised a few faces from Sushi Masato. As the name suggests, Maison Roru focuses on rolled sushi (Roru being the Japanese pronunciation of โ€œrollโ€). The menu keeps things simple: diners can choose sets of five or seven hand rolls, or go for the omakase set, which is what we did. At 2,650 baht per person, the omakase offered a nice variety and let the chefs decide the best sequence.

To go with it, we picked a glass of Hakuakusei sake (200 baht), which turned out to be a light and clean match for the food. Service was fast and very smooth, even with the crowd. The chefs moved quickly, the staff stayed attentive, and the overall atmosphere felt professional but not stiff.

Chef Masato Shimizu

Chef Masato Shimizu is one of the most respected Japanese chefs in Bangkok, known for his dedication to traditional Edomae-style sushi. Originally from Japan and trained in Tokyo, he made his name in New York City, where he earned a Michelin star at just 29 years old, becoming the youngest sushi chef to do so outside Japan.

After years abroad, he moved to Bangkok and opened Sushi Masato, a hidden 10-seat omakase restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 31 that quickly became one of the cityโ€™s hardest-to-book dining experiences. Maison Roru is his latest project, offering a more casual yet still refined take on his signature sushi style.

Conclusion

We had a great evening. Itโ€™s exciting to see a place like this open in a central location like Langsuan. It offers a new way to enjoy Masato-sanโ€™s workโ€”more accessible but still crafted with care. Weโ€™ll definitely be back.
