A Quiet Historical Restaurant in Silom
Silom has changed a lot over the years, but Baan Suriyasai somehow keeps its calm, tucked just off Surawong Road in a gorgeous heritage house youโd never guess was there. The moment you step in, the noise fades, and youโre surrounded by old wooden floors, high ceilings, and a sense that time slowed down inside.
A House with a Past
The house dates back to the early 1900s and once belonged to Phra Adisak Aphirat, a descendant of the powerful Bunnag family. It was carefully restored in the early 2000s and even won an architecture award in 2004. You can still feel the elegance of that period in the details โ the old staircase, the carved wood, the wide balconies. Itโs rare to find this kind of place in the middle of Bangkok.
Thai Cuisine with a Story
The restaurant serves Thai food with real depth. Many dishes are based on old royal court recipes or family favourites passed down for generations. Some have been adapted slightly, but nothing feels out of place. We had four delicious dishes. The presentation is beautiful without being fussy, and the flavours are spot on โ not too sweet, not too salty, just right:
Appetizer
Salted Egg Chilli Dip
Served withย Sun-dried Beef. An adapted version from crab roe relish, using salted eggs instead, is no less delicious. However, it follows the original recipe by offering tasty spiciness, especially when eaten with sun-dried beef and fresh vegetables.
Stuffed Squid in Soup
Stuffed squid with minced pork is best served in clear radish soup simmered for hours until the soup gets mildly sweet. A little twist in this recipe is sliced lotus roots and basil seeds.ย 450 Baht
Spicy Coriander, Dill and Culantro with Prawn
The spicy traditional salad uses coriander, dill and culantro. All are seasoned with chilli, fish sauce, lime, sugar, and roasted ground rice. Served with Prawn.ย 890 baht
Donโt Miss the Upstairs Bar
If you have time, head upstairs. Thereโs a quiet little bar that feels more like someoneโs private living room. They serve Thai-inspired cocktails, and itโs a good spot to relax if youโre coming for dinner or waiting for friends. It also gives you a better look at the house โ some original furniture and a few antiques are still on display.
Worth the Price, Easy to Access
Prices are a bit on the high side, but the experience is absolutely worth it. And considering how quiet it usually is, itโs a great spot when you want something special without a crowd. Thereโs even a private parking lot, which is rare for this part of town. The team is excellent โ friendly, warm, and happy to explain the story behind each dish if youโre curious. Theyโll even guide you through the menu if youโre not sure where to start.
Iโd still call ahead before going, especially if youโre planning dinner โ they sometimes host private events or special menus. But most of the time, you can just walk in. Note that there is a Baan Suriyasai Restaurant at One Bangkok just next to Lumphini Park.
From the restaurant:
There is more than one reason the food from Baan Suriyasai is always remembered. Delectable flavours are the first thing to secure a place in everyoneโs heart, but beyond this are the stories behind each dish, all told through Baan Suriyasaiโs home cooking recipes. Many of the recipes combine history with flavours, so not only the tastes but also the stories have been passed down from generation to generation. Dishes known by heart include heirloom recipes and some with a twist, with all adaptations made to ensure each dish becomes a family favourite. As a result, these dishes have equally become favourites of visitors. The kitchen at Baan Suriyasai creates unique cookery by gathering culinary wisdom from family friends to the royal court of Thailand, introducing unforgettable tastes to all guests.
