A Tribute to the Mother of King Rama IX in Thonburi
Princess Mother Memorial Park
Princess Mother Memorial Park is a quiet and respectful place dedicated to Princess Srinagarindra, the mother of the late King Rama IX. It’s located on the Thonburi side of Bangkok, just a short walk from the Chao Phraya River and near the small Guan Yu Shrine. Despite being in a busy part of the city, the park feels peaceful and a bit hidden, making it a pleasant place to take a break.
What to See
The park is a mix of well-kept gardens, shady walkways, and a group of small museum buildings. Inside the buildings, visitors can learn more about Princess Srinagarindra’s life and her important role in modern Thai history. She was deeply involved in improving public health, education, and rural development across the country.
The museum displays include many old photographs, personal belongings, and examples of the charity work she supported. One building shows a reconstruction of the house where she lived when she was young, giving insight into her humble background. Many of the exhibits highlight how much she cared for others and how simply she lived, even as a member of the royal family.
Outside, the park is calm and shaded, with benches and flowering plants. Some of the buildings use traditional Thai architecture, with wooden structures and sloped roofs. In the mornings, you might see a few locals practising Tai Chi under the trees.
History of the Park
The park was built in 1993 on the order of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) to honour his mother, Princess Srinagarindra. She was born in 1900 in a modest family and later studied nursing and public health. Throughout her life, she worked to improve the lives of people in rural areas, focusing on healthcare and education. She was loved by many Thais for her dedication and often visited hill tribe villages in the north, far from the public eye.
The park was built near the site of her old family home, adding a personal touch to the location. It opened to the public as a place for people to remember her work and learn about her life.
How to Get There
The easiest way to reach the park is by taking the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha Din Daeng Pier, then walking a few minutes inland. You can also take a taxi from Wongwian Yai BTS Station. The area is not far from other interesting places on the Thonburi side, such as Wat Prayoon, Guan Yu Shrine, and Santa Cruz Church.
You can explore displays about her work in public health, education, and community development, as well as personal items that highlight her modest and caring nature. The park also features traditional Thai architecture and a well-maintained garden, offering a quiet place for a short stroll and to admire locals practising Tai Chi.
