Thai Restaurant at Velaa Langsuan

JTAP is a discreet new Thai restaurant hidden in the basement of Velaa Sindhorn Village on Langsuan Road. The entrance is minimalist, with just a small sign above the doorway, so itโ€™s easy to miss if youโ€™re walking by. Thereโ€™s no menu outside, and from the look of it, we werenโ€™t sure what to expectโ€”but curiosity won. We stepped in and found a warm, welcoming space with light wood furniture, soft lighting, and an open kitchen where the chefs were working nonstop.

JTAP is the latest restaurant by Chef Tap Supasit Kokpol from the nearby Coda Restaurant. The name combines his nickname with the Thai honorific โ€œJโ€โ€”a friendly way to show respect to someone senior or experienced. Itโ€™s a familiar naming style often used in local Thai restaurants, giving the place a personal and approachable feel despite its polished setting.

Despite the low profile, the place was already busy, and most tables were taken. We got lucky with a table right in front, facing the walking gallery.

The food was a good surprise: Itโ€™s Thai cuisine, but with a modern touch, with high-quality ingredients. The dishes stayed close to their roots, but with slightly refined presentation and balance. The standout for us was the ribeye yang, cooked just right and served with a punchy dipping sauce. The larb was rich, spicy with herbs, and the grilled fish came with a hint of smokiness and crispy skin. We also enjoyed the som tum kai kem, which was crunchy, sweet, sour and spicy, with delicate salted egg.

They donโ€™t serve alcohol yet, but the staff were friendly and openโ€”when we asked, they said itโ€™s fine to buy a beer or a bottle of wine from Villa Market just next door and bring it in.

Prices are quite high, but the quality of the ingredients and the attention to detail in the kitchen justify it. JTAP feels like itโ€™s aiming for something special: authentic Thai food, done with skill and care, in a quiet and elegant space.
