Benjarong Restaurant – Baan Dusit Thani

Benjarong Restaurant at Baan Dusit Thani

Benjarong is a Thai restaurant inside Baan Dusit Thani, an old white house with a large garden in the middle of Bangkok’s Silom area. With Sala Daeng’s traffic and high-rises just outside, the garden feels surprisingly quiet.

The house has wooden floors, tall windows, vintage furniture, and a few antiques. Some tables look out across the garden, others are in corners for more privacy.

The House

The mansion was built before World War II by a Hong Kong trader and designed by a German architect, which explains the European style you don’t usually see in old Bangkok houses. It was later known as Baan Sala Daeng and stayed with the Osathanugrah family for years.

The house was empty for decades before Dusit International restored it in 2019. They kept original details, including two hand-painted columns moved from the old Dusit Thani Hotel.

The Food

The menu is based on royal and aristocratic recipes from the late 1800s and early 1900s. The chefs worked with researchers to adapt old recipes for modern tastes. Food is traditional Thai, carefully presented, with fresh local ingredients.

We started with a betel leaf appetiser topped with chopped herbs, tiny flowers, and a dressing that was just spicy enough. Then a clear soup, served with hot broth poured at the table.

The river prawn curry stood out. Large prawns, cooked right, in a rich sauce that balanced spice, sweetness, and a touch of bitterness. Very classic.

They grow some herbs in their own garden. Service is warm but not formal.

Khao Chae

Khao Chae at Benjarong - Baan Dusit Thani

Khao Chae is steamed rice in jasmine-scented water, served cold, with a tray of sweet and savoury side dishes. It sounds odd at first. Cold rice? In water?

We tried it and now understand why this royal recipe survives, especially in the hot season. It’s one of the most refreshing meals you can have in Bangkok when temperatures pass 35°C. Available roughly March to May.

The Garden

After eating, it’s nice to walk around. White sofas and low tables sit near the pool under the trees. A good spot to sit for a few minutes before heading back into busy Silom.
