Thai Art in a Historic Mansion on Phra Athit
Baan Chao Phraya Art Gallery sits in a restored neoclassical mansion that once belonged to Prince Sathittamrongsawas, son of King Pinklao. The house later became the residence of Mario Tamagno, the Italian architect behind many of Bangkok’s landmarks such as the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall and Hua Lamphong Railway Station.
The Petroleum Authority of Thailand supported its restoration, converting the century-old home into a public art space. Located near the Chao Phraya River on Phra Athit Road, the gallery fits well into Bangkok’s Old Town atmosphere, surrounded by small cafés and historic buildings.
The gallery presents changing exhibitions every one to two months, covering painting, sculpture, photography, and digital art. Both rising and established Thai artists are regularly featured. Entry is free, and visitors can explore the art at their own pace without crowds. It’s a worthwhile cultural stop for those interested in local contemporary art and heritage architecture.
Entry is completely free, making it an affordable cultural stop.
