342 Bar

A Local Rooftop Bar in Thonburi

342 Bar is a hidden rooftop bar on the fifth floor of Baan Wanglang Riverside Hotel, right at the edge of Wang Lang Market, on the Thonburi side of Bangkok. I walked past it twice before spotting the entrance. Take the elevator up, and you’re on a small rooftop looking straight at the Grand Palace. Wat Arun glows to your left once the sun drops.

It’s not high. Five floors are nothing compared to the skyscraper rooftops across town. But you’re so close to the river that you can watch the express boats pass below. The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew are right there, maybe 200 metres away. At night, the temples light up, and the whole scene looks unreal.

The cocktails won’t win awards. I had the 342 of Paradise, which was vodka with blue curacao and lychee. Sweet, easy to drink, fine. Most cocktails cost around 280 Baht. They run a happy hour from 4 pm to 8 pm, buy two get one free on Hoegaarden and house drinks. The food menu is short. Burgers, fries, sausages. People say the sausages are good. I stuck with beer.

Customers are mostly Thai. Young couples, groups of friends, and hospital staff from Siriraj nearby. It fills up fast on weekends, so book ahead or come early. No dress code, no pretence. Just plastic chairs, fairy lights and one of the best views in Bangkok for the price. If you’ve spent the afternoon eating your way through Wang Lang Market, this is a great place to end your visit.
