Phi Phi Island Photo Gallery
Phi Phi Island is one of the most famous island destinations in Thailand, about 45 kilometres southeast of Phuket. The archipelago consists of six islands, with Phi Phi Don being the main inhabited island and Phi Phi Leh home to the famous Maya Bay.
Most visitors come on day trips from Phuket by speedboat or ferry. The water around Phi Phi is some of the clearest in the region, with good visibility and plenty of marine life. The viewpoint hike on Phi Phi Don rewards you with one of the most photographed views in Thailand, looking down over the twin bays from the top of the island.
Maya Bay was closed from 2018 to 2022 to allow the ecosystem to recover. Since reopening, visitor numbers are controlled, and boats no longer land directly on the beach.
I have been visiting Phi Phi since 1990, well before “The Beach” was filmed at Maya Bay. I saw the bay when it was virtually empty and watched it become one of the most visited spots in Southeast Asia. The photos in this gallery span many years of visits, showing the islands, the bays, the viewpoints, and the underwater life around the archipelago. All photos are my own. For the full travel guide, see Phi Phi Island.
