A great Mediterranean rooftop restaurant on the 22nd floor
Pastel is a delightful new rooftop bar and Mediterranean restaurant on the 22nd floor of the exclusive Aira Hotel, on the popular Soi 11, off Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok. Pastel is quite a recent addition to the ever-growing rooftop scene of Bangkok and is gaining popularity very fast.
The size of the venue and the beautiful design is what strike first as you exit the lift and enter the restaurant. It’s not a fully open rooftop as it only opens on one side, but it is breezy and spacious, with comfortable sofas the umbrellas along the edge add a nice summer touch.
There are four rows of tables, and as always on rooftop venues, the seats on the edge are always occupied first, so try to book early to make sure you get a table with a view of the Bangkok skyline. The restaurant is surprisingly large but cosy and gets full and lively as the sun sets.
What to order at Pastel Rooftop
We treated ourselves to sangria and prosecco while admiring the sun going down on Bangkok’s cityscape. The low-rise buildings and open land in front of the hotel allow an impressive city skyline view, and while it’s not as impressive as a riverside, it creates a superb photo or video background for your selfies.
Pastel offers a delightful taste of the Mediterranean for everyone to enjoy, using only fresh ingredients directly from local farms. The restaurant’s cosy atmosphere welcomes you, and its menu is designed to highlight Mediterranean cuisine. From traditional small dishes to raw seafood options, each plate represents the rich culinary heritage of the region.
We went twice and were not shy to order lots of appetizers to a main dish to share:
Provencal tartare: hand-cut wagyu beef, parmesan and provencal seasoning (590 baht), Piquillos de la Mama: marinated bell pepper, cheese, crostini (290 baht), Tuna Surprise: Chu Toro tuna tartare and puffed quinoa served in avocados (790 baht), Calamari a la Plancha: grilled calamari stuffed with chorizo on smashed peas (370 baht)
3 Gillardeau N4: oysters served with white wine (490 baht), The Nicoise: lightly seared tuna chu-toro, heirloom tomatoes, quail eggs, anchovies, olives, served with mustard vinaigrette (590 baht)
Our main dish was an excellent Mediterranean Tajine: market seafood, Ras el hanout (a Moroccan spice blend known for its aromatic and complex flavour), served with Moroccan flatbread (1,990 baht).
The menu is truly appetizing with a wide choice of tapas, appetizers, main dishes and even beautiful desserts. We’ve been to many rooftop restaurants in Bangkok where incredibly expensive restaurants serve a rather soulless set of dishes presented with rehearsed descriptions using fancy words. Not here: Pastel is truly a restaurant, where food is cooked with passion and care, served by a friendly team, is attentive and well-spoken.
Pastel Rooftop Bar is worth going to for dinner even if it isn’t a rooftop, and it’s a perfect place to meet friends around drinks and an unforgettable dinner.
