One of the Oldest Department Stores in Bangkok
Central Chidlom is one of the most well-known department stores in Bangkok. It first opened in 1973 and has always been a favourite shopping destination for Bangkok residents and tourists. Located right next to Chidlom BTS Station, itโs easy to reach and part of the larger Central shopping group, which includes CentralWorld and Central Embassy.
We visited again recently and noticed many changes. The building just finished a big renovation, and the interior looks much more modern now. There are new lights, wider walkways, and more comfortable seating areas. The layout feels brighter and more organised than before, but it still keeps the relaxed and practical atmosphere that locals appreciate.
Each floor is focused on a different category, with international and Thai brands mixed together. The ground floor has cosmetics and perfumes, plus a large book section and stationery corner. Upstairs, youโll find menโs and womenโs fashion, shoes, homeware, and travel gear. The childrenโs section and toys are still on the top floor.
The food court and supermarket in the basement are worth a stop. The Central Food Hall is known for offering high-quality groceries, including imported items. Thereโs also a nice choice of restaurants, cafรฉs and dessert shops around the building, from Thai classics to Japanese and Western favourites.
The 7-floor department store offers various living products, including clothing, fashion, home necessities, electronics, books, and an immense sports shop. The new design offers wide open spaces and a better display on each floor, making navigating easier once you recover from the radical layout change!
A Bit of History
Central Chidlom was the first flagship store of the Central Group. It was designed to introduce the concept of modern retail to Bangkok in the 1970s. Over the decades, it survived a major fire in 1995, recovered quickly, and continued to expand. Even with bigger shopping malls like CentralWorld and Siam Paragon nearby, Central Chidlom stayed popular because of its convenient size, good service, quality selection and direct connection to Central Embassy, the luxury wing.
After the 2024โ2025 renovation, the store has kept its original spirit while updating its look for a new generation of shoppers.
