Sky on 20 Bangkok
Sky on 20 Rooftop Bar is on the 26th floor of the Novotel on Sukhumvit 20 in Bangkok, so you can guess that the name wasn’t chosen from the floor but from the street number.
The way to access this beautiful place differs greatly from most rooftops we see. You first take the lift to the 26th floor and once there, there is no grand door or welcome committee: just a slightly golden fire exit door with a tiny sign, so modest people hesitate to push just in case an alarm would ring. So we pushed that door and climbed some anonymous staircase… no alarm rang.
Sky on 20 Rooftop Bar is not at the top of our Bangkok Best Rooftops list since the view is so limited, but it’s well designed with a good atmosphere if you stay in this part of Sukhumvit.
The rooftop is pleasant and well-designed, with many large sofas facing the front of the building and many tables for those who arrived too late to get the sofas.
The views are not bad but not grandiose. The left corner sees the sun setting on Benjakitti Park and the 4 towers of Millennium Residence Bangkok and their cool aluminium design. On the other side of the rooftop, get of view of the old buildings across the street, and on the right-hand side, you can wave at Brewski, the new rooftop of Radisson Blu on Sukhumvit Road. The retractable roof is huge and, unfortunately, spoils a bit the open sky view; it could have been a little shorter.
The atmosphere at Sky on 20 Rooftop Bar is good, the lighting is just right, so it doesn’t overwhelm the atmosphere, the team is very amicable and speaks very good English, and DJ is good. When we arrived, the music was a bit much on the loud clubbing side but soon became much better with easy-going tunes that fit the sunset better. We ordered chicken wings and it was the only hiccup… skip those. Prices are also a bit on the high side for a Novotel (200 baht for a beer).
Verdict?
Sky on 20 Rooftop Bar is not at the top of the list since the view is so limited for Bangkok, but it’s well designed with a good atmosphere if you stay in this part of Sukhumvit.
