Hi-So Rooftop Bar Bangkok
When the Hi-So rooftop bar at So Sofitel Bangkok opened in Bangkok, we thought this was just another luxury hotel, so how great could it be? Sathorn Road is nice and even posh, but it mostly looks like a large avenue lined with tall and shiny skyscrapers and a growing collection of luxury hotels (think Banyan Tree, Sukhothai Hotel, W Hotel and the likes)
But well, it wasn’t far from home and who could resist a rooftop with a glass of good white wine, so we didn’t need extra motivation to get there. The hotel is surprisingly original, with great attention to detail, features and decoration. On the way from the parking to the rooftop, you’ll have to change the lift and get a glimpse of the Park Society restaurant and its striking skyline view. This is already a priceless view, right out of a New York movie scene, with the diners in the foreground and the city skyline in the far. But we didn’t come for dinner, so we took a second lift to the 26th floor.
You’ll be welcomed at the top floor restaurant’s dimmed hallway by friendly staff dressed in unusual attires, strongly reminding you of Aladdin’s outfit. Once you step outside on the rooftop, the view seizes you. It’s not what I expected… rooftops in Bangkok offer a sea of roofs as far as the eye can see, but So Sofitel has a unique location just above the gigantic Lumpini park. This explains the view in the restaurant below… the closest building is at least a kilometre away! Where in Bangkok can you get such a unique location?
Prices are as high as the rooftop, as you can expect from a five-star city hotel, but the first drinks on the menu are not as extreme as the Sky Bar at Lebua or 360 at Hilton Millennium or Vertigo at Banyan Tree. You can order some tapas to enjoy while the light declines on Lumpini park, but any plate of nibbling starts at 1,000 baht, and it’s not as good as we expected.
Unfortunately, the Hi-So rooftop faces north, so you will not get a direct sunset view; nevertheless, once the city lights start to shine against the dark blue sky, the view is breathtaking. If you feel like having more privacy, there is a floor above the main terrace with slightly different views of Bangkok.
