A popular weekend market near Bangkok
Amphawa is one of the most popular floating markets in Thailand. The village dates back to the mid-17th century, and on weekends it draws big crowds of tourists and Bangkokians. The food stalls have spread from the riverbanks out into the surrounding streets, with a wide range of Thai dishes and snacks.

What to Eat at Amphawa?
Seafood is the main draw at Amphawa. You will see fresh prawns, fish and shellfish grilled on wooden boats moored around the central bridge. The smell pulls you in, so it is no surprise to see people packed along both sides of the river all day.

If you would rather not perch on a concrete ledge, walk a little further from the bridge to find proper restaurants with tables and chairs. Along each side of the canal, old wooden shops sell local sweets, smoothies and ice cream, good if you have a sweet tooth.

What to Do at Amphawa?
Once you have had enough of walking around, take one of the longtail boats and explore the waterways. Tours run from several counters around the bridge.
The river tour takes you across the Mae Khlong River, where a couple of small temples have their own character. You might find golden seated Buddhas, tall chedis and even small museums. These spots make a nice break from the crowds, and the cool breeze on the water is welcome after the heat of the market.

When to Go
Amphawa runs Friday to Sunday and is really an afternoon and evening market, busiest from late afternoon into the night. That timing is the whole point. If you stay after dark, you can take a boat out to see the fireflies in the trees along the river, which is what sets Amphawa apart from the daytime floating markets like Damnoen Saduak. The fireflies show best on darker nights away from the full moon, and they fade in the cooler, drier months, so the warmer part of the year is the better bet.
How to Visit Amphawa?

There are a few ways to get there from central Bangkok. A cheap option is the BTS Skytrain (Silom Line) to Bang Wa Station. Take Exit 1, grab a taxi to the Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai), then a minivan to Amphawa. The trip is around 90 minutes and involves a few changes, so it eats into your day.

Booking a private Amphawa tour is the fastest way to reach the market. It includes hotel pickup and drop-off, so it works well for small groups or families.

Amphawa is an easy day or evening trip from Bangkok and a good way to eat well, ride the canals and see a couple of quiet temples. If you can, time it so you are still there after dark for the fireflies.
