The Famous Songkhla Egg Cake on Banthat Thong
HAAB started as a small Covid-era pop-up selling khanom khai (Thai egg cake) made from a Songkhla family recipe, and has grown into one of the most queued-for snack shops on Banthat Thong Road. The flagship sits at 995-997 Banthat Thong Road, fitted out as “The Modernisation of Songkhla Old Town” with a retro shopfront and a charcoal oven going behind the counter. There is no seating. This is a takeaway shop.

What We Ordered
The Khanom Khai (Charcoal Egg Cake)

The whole shop is built around one item. Small round egg cakes baked over real charcoal, crispy on the outside and soft in the middle with a generous amount of butter inside. The brand name is a tongue-in-cheek joke: HAAB stands for Heart Attack Amount of Butter. The smell of butter and charcoal hits you before you reach the counter. Sets come in three sizes: S with 10 pieces at 70 baht, M with 15 pieces at 90 baht, and L with 20 pieces at 100 baht. They keep for up to 14 days in a sealed bag and reheat well in a toaster oven, but they are best eaten fresh on the street within ten minutes of buying.
Getting There
HAAB has multiple branches around Banthat Thong now, but the flagship at 995-997 is the one to visit. Open daily from 3 pm to midnight. Easiest by Grab or taxi to Banthat Thong Road, then walk. BTS National Stadium is about a 15-minute walk away.

HAAB is one of the small Banthat Thong snack shops that genuinely earns its queue. The egg cakes are worth the trip even if you only stop for ten minutes.
